In May, Donna Bowen, who is the 2003 Texas State Liaison for the Women’s Caucus of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America (ATLA), lobbied members of Congress as a delegate to the Women’s Caucus Lobby Days, an annual event sponsored by ATLA.During the event, over 100 women trial lawyers gathered in Washington, D.C., to meet with members from both parties and discuss critical issues facing trial lawyers and their clients. “In addition to presenting our views, this event enables us to put a real, live face on the American trial lawyer. When we meet with legislators, we try to give them a warm, human perspective of our issues. We also try to lend a kinder, gentler quality to whatever persona they might have imagined a trial lawyer to be,” Bowen said.
Democracy in Action
Bowen was part of a 10-member Texas delegation that met with representatives from several regions of Texas.
“In all congressional offices we met won-derful, enthusiastic staff,” Bowen added. “Many of the women who participate in this event bring their daughters so they can see democracy in action.”
