Following are summaries of recent or current cases handled by Slack & Davis medical device and pharmaceutical attorneys.

Multiple recoveries in cases involving Fen-phen, an anti-obesity medication that consisted of two drugs: fenfluramine and phentermine. The drug was found to cause heart disease and pulmonary hypertension, primarily in women. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requested its withdrawal from the market in September 1997. Each case was evaluated and settled individually.

Multiple recoveries for cases involving Vioxx, a drug prescribed to persons with chronic pain symptoms and commonly used by persons with arthritis. Heart attack, stroke, blood clots and colon damage are harmful effects that have been evaluated in persons prescribed this medication. Each case was evaluated and settled individually.

Multiple recoveries for cases involving deaths or severe injuries from Baycol, manufactured by Bayer. Baycol (cerivastatin) is one of the “statin” class of drugs. Due to at least 31 deaths in the United States, Bayer withdrew Baycol in August 2001 after marketing its product aggressively. The deaths were attributed to the condition rhabdomyolysis, which is the breakdown of muscle-cell membranes and release of the contents of muscle cells into the bloodstream. Each case was evaluated and settled individually.

Slack & Davis played a lead role in negotiating the confidential terms and amounts of the nationwide Norplant settlement for 1,400 women against American Home Products and Wyeth-Ayerst Laboratories, the makers of Norplant. The women using Norplant were not adequately warned about the implanted contraceptive’s serious side effects.

Multiple recoveries in claims related to defective pacemakers and defibrillators manufactured by Guidant Corporation. Each case was evaluated and settled individually.

Multiple recoveries in claims related to defective hip and knee replacement products manufactured by Sulzer Orthopedics. Each case was evaluated and settled individually.

Multiple recoveries in claims related to defective knee replacement products manufactured by Smith & Nephew. Each case was evaluated and settled individually.

Individual claims involving liver damage related to Rezulin, a Type II diabetes medication now removed from the market.

Individual claims involving liver damage related to the interaction between Dilantin (an anticonvulsant) and acetaminophen. Warnings of the dangers of the interaction risks were not properly disclosed on the prescription label or other product information.
