On May 9, 2019, Mr. Smith was exiting the Atrium Hotel and Suites in Irving, Texas. He had been at the hotel with his wife for a business meeting. A hotel shuttle van was driving through the parking lot and proceeded toward the front of the hotel. As it approached, it struck Mr. Smith, causing serious injuries, including fracturing both legs, and requiring several surgeries. Ultimately, one of his legs had to be amputated at the knee.
