KTVB, Idaho’s NBC affiliate, featured commentary from Ladd Sanger, our Dallas managing partner and a licensed pilot, in a report examining the maintenance history of the UPS MD-11 cargo aircraft that crashed near Louisville.

FAA records reviewed by KTVB show the aircraft had been grounded in San Antonio for six weeks earlier this fall, which is consistent with a period of heavy maintenance. In the interview, Sanger explained why investigators will focus on the aircraft’s inspection work and engine-mount hardware as they analyze what caused the engine separation and in-flight fire seen in early video.

“This is a defining and catastrophic event in aviation,” Sanger said. “The maintenance history of this aircraft and the condition of the engine attachment points are going to be central to the NTSB investigation.”

Sanger also noted that there is currently no indication of pilot error based on the early evidence released so far.
