Mike Slack Discusses Runway Safety Systems on WESH 2 Following Amazon Cargo Jet Crash

Aviation attorney Mike Slack was interviewed by WESH 2 News in Orlando following the September 6, 2026 crash of an Amazon cargo jet at Miami International Airport, which overran the runway and struck vehicles on a nearby road, killing five people and injuring five others.

Slack provided technical context on the Engineered Materials Arresting System, or EMAS, a runway safety system installed at roughly 70 airports nationwide that uses crushable material to stop aircraft before they leave airport property. Neither Miami nor Orlando International has EMAS installed.

“We have an airplane that had too much energy, exceeded the available runway,” Slack said. “There are systems that can be put in place that prevent the airplane from leaving the airport perimeter.”
