Mike Slack Interviewed on KTLA 5 Following Near-Miss Incident at LAX
Aviation attorney and licensed pilot Mike Slack was Interviewed on KTLA 5 following a dangerous near-miss at Los Angeles International Airport, in which a Frontier Airlines passenger jet nearly collided with two construction trucks while taxiing late Wednesday night.
Slack identified several concerning factors in the incident, including the fact that the area was not visible to ground controllers from the tower at night and that the airport’s ground monitoring system failed to issue an alert. Most critically, the trucks were not equipped with ground transponders.
“The trucks not having the transponders is the most inexcusable thing in the list of concerns,” Slack said. “It’s going to get some attention by the regulators and the FAA.”
Slack drew a direct parallel to last month’s deadly Air Canada crash at LaGuardia Airport, where a vehicle also lacked a transponder and the runway warning system failed to alert of the impending collision.
The FAA has confirmed it is investigating the incident. Slack Davis will continue to monitor updates as the investigation progresses.
