The Hagler Institute for Advanced Study recently announced that A&M President Dr. Katherine Banks has appointed Michael L. Slack, of Austin, to its external advisory board. The external advisory board provides guidance, advice, and recommendations to the Hagler Institute.

Established in 2010 by the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents, The Hagler Institute for Advanced Study is designed to be a catalyst to enrich the intellectual climate and educational experiences at Texas A&M University. It is a mechanism for attracting world-class talent to the University and is driven by nominations of National Academy and Nobel Prize caliber researchers that align with the existing strengths and ambitions of the University.

“We are pleased to welcome Mike Slack to the external advisory board,” said John L. Junkins, Founding Director of the Hagler Institute. “Mike’s expertise in aerospace engineering, along with his wealth of knowledge in aviation law, will be invaluable to the Hagler Institute as we continue our mission to invite prominent scholars to pursue advanced study.”

Mr. Slack has been practicing law for 37 years and has litigated hundreds of cases across thirty-seven states, arising from catastrophic injuries and deaths due to unsafe products and practices. For most of his legal career, he has focused on aviation accidents in all facets of aviation from major airline disasters to general aviation aircraft. An outspoken aviation safety advocate, Slack has utilized the civil justice system to eliminate unsafe products and practices as a condition of case resolution. Before becoming a lawyer, Mike was a senior aerospace engineer at NASA, where he worked on the Apollo-Soyuz and Space Shuttle programs and received special recognition from NASA for his contributions.

He has also been honored as an Outstanding Aerospace Engineer and Distinguished Aerospace Engineer Alumni by the Texas A&M Department of Aerospace Engineering and as the 2023 Distinguished Aggie Lawyer of the Year by the Texas Aggie Bar Association.
