Air Travel California
California is one of the major hubs for international travel.
California has over 200 airports, ranging from limited-use airports in rural areas to commercial airports like Los Angeles International Airport, with its Flight Path Learning Center and the iconic Theme Building, and Sacramento International Airport, with its many pieces of modern art, such as Flying Carpet, Chromatic Oasis, and Active Ecosystem. California also has a large business jet contingency and general aviation population. With as big of a part as aviation plays in California life and tourism, accidents are bound to happen. According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), there were 109 airplane and helicopter crashes in 2014 throughout California. Although the crashes were dispersed fairly evenly throughout the state, they were slightly more concentrated in southern and northern California. The crashes that took place in those regions account for about 73% of 2014 aviation accidents. Not surprisingly, the smallest number of crashes took place in the central portion of the state, which is the least populated.
Slack & Davis aviation attorneys understand what it is like to be the passenger and the pilot, because our aviation lawyers are pilots themselves. This allows our attorneys an inside perspective into the field of aviation. They understand how easily and quickly things can go wrong when flying.
Aviation and California Economy
Boeing Company is just one of the many aviation and aerospace companies that provide jobs for California residents. California’s economy depends heavily on tourism and agriculture, both of which rely on commercial and general aviation to thrive.
The U.S. Air Force, Navy and Forest Service provide aviation manufacturing jobs for California residents across the state. Due to the state’s proximity to the coast and its ability to accommodate large planes and international flights, many military arms make use of the state to build and to maintain their airplanes and helicopters.
For the past several years, there has been an annual California Aviation Day at the Capitol, which is held on the north steps of the Capitol, in Sacramento. It is an event meant to show California citizens the vital role aviation plays in the state’s economy. What this event lacks in age, it makes up for in sponsors from many different California organizations that regularly rely on aviation for day-to-day business.
According to NASA, California also has 34 aviation museums, including Sacramento County’s Aerospace Museum of California and the Air Force Flight Test Museum of the Edwards Air Force Base. All 34 of the museums put an emphasis on not only the history of the aviation industry, but also the vitality of aviation in the state.
Charter Helicopters and Tours
Charter helicopters are a quick and convenient way to travel around the state of California. Helicopter tours offer unique vantage points for tourists not afraid of heights. Charter helicopters are also a way to bypass the infamous Los Angeles traffic — a perk which celebrities often enjoy.
However, charter helicopters and California helicopter tours sometimes feel pressure to fly in order to keep up with the demand of their clients. This can cause them to take unnecessary risks such as flying in inclement weather, overloading the aircraft or flying at night.
Slack & Davis attorneys understand the complicated regulations associated with charter helicopters and bring their technical knowledge and skills to the courtroom.
Reba McEntire’s Band
In March 1991, Reba McEntire’s tour manager and 10 members of her band died in a Hawker Siddeley chartered airplane crash in San Diego. Slack & Davis represented passengers in this crash.
The Hawker Siddeley that was carrying members of Reba’s band clipped its wing on part of the Otay Mountain Peak only a couple of minutes after takeoff. The band just finished performing and was heading to another engagement when their chartered plane went down 10 miles from the airport.
Family members of three musicians sued the charter plane’s owner, Duncan Aircraft, for wrongful death. They alleged that the pilot, who was a Duncan employee, caused the crash by failing to clear the mountain. They also claimed Duncan was culpable for the crash by not supplying aeronautical charts, which provide data for the height and location of local mountain ranges.
Airplane Crashes California
In May 2004, a private plane crashed in Columbia, California. The Piper PA-28R-180 experienced a loss of engine power after takeoff, killing two. Slack & Davis represented passengers in this crash.
General Aviation in California
Due to the high number of general aviation flights that occur during peak tourist season, passengers can be faced with needless risk posed by inexperienced pilots, poorly maintained equipment or bad weather.
People injured in a plane crash or members dealing with the loss of a loved one due to an airplane or helicopter crash can often feel disoriented or forgotten. Our California aviation attorneys will help navigate the complex laws so the survivors or family members can focus on healing.
